Modifications
Recent work by the All Aircraft Arcade (AAA) community on developing previously neglected aspects of IL-2 has resulted in some excellent additions to the game, including modifications to sound and visual effects and giving access to an enormous range of hitherto unflyable aircraft.
234 Squad approve the use of these now de facto acceptable modifications provided that they are not used negatively to affect the quality and equality of online play and are used in accordance with the settings of hosting servers.
For ease of use and commonality of installation, 234 Squad recommend the use of the Unified Installer.

Installation
If you have previously installed any Mods, remove the Mods and Files folders from your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder. If you are installing over a clean install of the game, ensure it is patched to version 4.08m.
Download the various parts of the unified installer to a convenient folder on your machine and then run the installation .exe file. Point the installer to your game's root folder and run the installation program, overwriting any files as required.
Following installation, switching between modded and clean versions of the game can be achieved via the .bat files or the very useful Il2VersionSwitcher.exe program, both of which can be found in your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder. Note that the Il2VersionsSwitcher program requires Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 to function.
CanonUK's English Channel Map (Beta)
CanonUK's English Channel Map is already included in Unified Install v1.1, so only use this installation package if you have not yet upgraded from version 1.0.
This quick installer is hosted here with kind permission of CanonUK, the map developer, and Uther, who helpfully assembled the installer package. Follow the instructions in the Read Me file, or if you are using Unified Install v1.0 replace your existing Mods/Mapmods/maps/all.ini file with this one instead.
